Consequences of no graphic recording, by Sue Fody, Graphic Recording Artist at Got It! Learning Designs in Denver, CO.What happens if you do NOTHING? This is one of my favorite questions as an instructional designer. Clients that fret over time and money have to consider what happens if they don’t make the investment and train their staff. Sometimes it’s terrifying! As a graphic recorder and trainers who are aspiring graphic recorders…or who just want to make better flipcharts and posters, you can move forward from wherever you are to where you want to be. But not if you do nothing.

My current aspiration is to improve my lettering groups. I watch others in my field and admire certain lettering clusters that I see. I want to use those various kinds of styles. And I can…if I practice. It really is harder than it looks, but my goal will be possible to attain because I have a vision in my head of what my lettering should look like. It’s where I want to be.

My second favorite question starts out with waving an invisible magic wand. With a magical wave of the wand the future is now. The end state is accomplished. What does that look like? If you want to improve the looks of your work, be it your own graphic recording, presentation posters or flipcharts, or anything else you strive to achieve, what will it look like? What’s the vision? What’s the ideal state you see? If you start describing it and your excitement is increasing, you’re on the way to achieving it. For me, I need to practice lettering groups on a daily basis – because if I don’t, I stagnate and my style doesn’t improve. I LOVE how my lettering is going to look. What about you?
