Is it the ‘tete-a-tete’ you need or just the goblet of wine?
Pattern recognition is the ability of the human brain to identify and act upon patterns. The ability to see patterns and make loose associations enhances creativity and has also served as a survival function – like seeing that bear in the woods.
Apophenia (the experience of seeing patterns or connections in random or meaningless data) is a result of our pattern-recognition systems misfiring. This is fascinating to me.
Apophenia is when people see images and faces in seemingly random places like the clouds, on toast, tree bark, mud splashes…or on the moon. These imaginative visions can result in some creative output for you. With your imagination you can see things with your unique perspective that others don’t readily discern.
You can see creatively! Look around. It can be as simple as looking at the texture on a painted wall and imagining what those shapes remind you of. Or you can look at some objects and take in the negative space around them. What do you see? (There is more than one answer. Go off on some tangents here.) How can you relate what your creative mind sees to some ideas you need to develop? Take these two seemingly unrelated concepts and put them together. The result may surprise you. Is the ‘tete-a-tete’ that you need, or just need the goblet of wine?
