work life balanceAs I write this and work diligently on a massive instructional design project, I find my workout times slipping away. Hmmm…and workouts are a priority for me. I also know the research shows we need breaks from our focused work every 60 – 90 minutes. How do you handle that time? Well at least I try to have that one under control. I can set my phone to get me up out of the chair every hour and one half or so. I can run up and down the stairs (time for tea), vacuum (yeah – everyone’s favorite chore) or do a few stretches and jumps to oil up those joints! To read more click here.

I’ve learned, in the mid-19th century, the idea of work-life balance was conceived to separate one’s self from the diligence of work and the pleasure of leisure. But how do we do that today when our work and “life” are so intertwined? Are our digital appliances responsible for that blurry line? What happens when you shut off your phone, or (gasp) forget to take it with you?

Being purposeful about your priorities is sometimes hard! Some effective techniques include scheduling workouts as meetings on your calendar. Set your phone to alert you to stand up and do something upright every 60 – 90 minutes. (That one’s easy…I know you can handle it.) Go talk to a live person or call someone if you work alone. You’ll actually be more efficient and productive if you give your brain a break! And by the way, when’s the last time you took a good vacation? Oh…that’s a whole ‘nother blog.

I can help your team be more engaged and retain more of what you teach. Ask me how I can help.
